Each time the richest footballer in the world argument pops up, several names like Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar are the ones usually mentioned by most football fans. The trio are the highest earners in world football currently but funny enough they are just mere members in the highest-earning category rather than topping the list.
Lionel Messi penned a new deal with FC Barcelona which sees the mercurial Argentine take home a whopping $127 million in salary and bonuses included. This is followed by Christiano Ronaldo with $109 which is actually a pay cut after falling out with Madrid in a request for higher pay.
No one is close to these figures but neither of them tops the list of richest footballer in the world which may seem a bit of surprise to many.
The richest footballer in the world presently is Faiq Bolkiah of Leicester City who is still yet to kick a ball at the elite division (EPL).
Faiq Bolkiah is a Brunei international who plays as an attacking midfielder for Leicester City. He has equally played for several teams in England including Chelsea, Arsenal and Southampton, though at youth level.
Bolkiah has been on the books for Leicester city since 2016 after signing his first professional contract but yet to play any professional game for the foxes.
While Faiq is still yet to play any professional game for his club, he is only 21 years of age at the moment which makes it a possibility for him to get on the biggest stage in future should he gather all the right energy.
With the fact he isn’t playing at the highest level just yet, one would expect him to take home a minimal salary.
So where Does Faiq Bolkiah Fortune Come from?
Faiq’s firm and fortunes comes from his social status. He is the nephew of the sultan of Brunei an oil-rich country. With his fortune valued at $20 billion, Faiq is also the son of Prince Jefri also known as the “biggest spender in the world”.
Jefri (Faiq’s father) spent over $13 billion in his lifetime and his father too owned an incredible 2,300 luxury cars, 8 Boeing airplanes, 500 houses in different locations plus 5 Yachts.
Jefri once paid the late Michael Jackson for a private performance for his son (Faiq) when he was just 7 years old. Jefri paid out 17 million dollars to Michael Jackson just to put a smile on his son’s face.
Faiq is nothing close to his father judging by the fact that his reserves can actually buy a top-flight club in England but he prefers working hard to play at the biggest stage rather. The 21 years old is determined to succeed in football, even admitting once in an interview that trains extra hours just to have that opportunity of getting in front of the cameras at the biggest stage.
He admitted he’s always loved being on the pitch with football at his feet and if doing so will help him actualize his dream of playing at the highest level then he is ready to do more.
Quoting his words, Faiq said “you have to train very hard to breakthrough. Being part of one of the biggest clubs in the world has opened my eyes, you have to train hard to even get the slightest chance of becoming a world-class player”.
Still yet to feature in the English Premier League but has represented his country at the international level and even scored a goal in a 2 – 1 defeat to Timor Leste.
Faiq Bolkiah humility and eagerness to be great in his own domain were proven back when he had the chance to play for the United States of America a far better footballing nation as compared to Brunei but he turned it down.
Haven born in Los Angeles, the now 21 years old was eligible and even got approached several times by the US national team scout given his immense talent but he decided to pledge his allegiance to his fatherland.
Will Faiq Bolkiah ever be that successful in his career? Well, we have to keep watching but the truth is, he is The Richest Footballer in The World right now.
